Giuseppe Arcimboldo (Milan, 1530 environ –1593)A ses debuts, les contemporains d'Arcimboldo n'auraient pas pu imaginer qu'il allait realiser ce qui le rend celèbre aujourd'hui. Ses oeuvres juveniles etaient habituellementdestinees aux cathedrales de Milan ou de Monza, mais c'est à partir de 1562, quand il fut convoque à la cour imperiale de Prague, que son style et ses sujets changèrent. Pour la cour, ilimagina des fantaisies originales et grotesques faites de fleurs, de fruits, d'animaux et d'objets assembles pour former un portrait humain. Certains etaient de nature satyrique, et d'autres des personnifications allegoriques. Si son travail est aujourd'hui considere comme une curiosite du XVIe siècle, il puise en realite ses racines dans le contexte de la fin de la Renaissance. A cette epoque, les collectionneurs et les scientifiques commencèrent à prêter plus d'attention à la nature, recherchant des curiosites naturelles à exposer dans leurs cabinets de curiosite.
